In the world of dance, every movement tells a story. It's a mesmerizing art form that combines passion, athleticism, and expression in a way that few others can match. Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with the talented dancers of Momentum Dance Center to capture the beauty and artistry of their performances through a dance photography session in downtown Richmond, Virginia. Here, I want to share the magic and inspiration that unfolded during this unforgettable experience.

The Dance Company

"Momentum Dance Center was established in 2015 with the intention of providing students with exceptional dance training while also instilling important life skills like discipline, work ethic, respect and accountability. Now, more than five years later, Momentum has become known for producing highly technical and versatile dancers who are thoughtful, hardworking, responsible young people."

The Vision Behind the Session

Before the photography session, Ashley Wyatt, the owner of Momentum Dance Center, and I went over the vision for the shoot. Ashley let me know that the dancers would be wearing neutral colors and the Momentum Dance Center theme this season is "Time to Shine." She was looking for a location with pops of color, which we definitely accomplished. We also wanted to capture not just the physical prowess of the dancers but we also wanted to freeze those fleeting moments of grace, strength, and emotion in time.

The Day of the Session: A Perfect Location

On the day of the shoot, we met at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to take individual headshots of each of the dancers and then also group company pictures. We then headed to some amazing murals located in downtown Richmond where each of the dancers were able to pick their own pose and unique mural backdrop.

What struck me most during this dance photography session was the unwavering dedication of the dancers. Their commitment to their craft was evident in every step, jump, and leap. Their passion radiated from within, creating an atmosphere of inspiration for everyone present.

Collaborating with Momentum Dance Center on this dance photography session was an honor and a privilege. It reminded me of the transformative power of art and the ability of photography to freeze moments in time.
